When I first became a mother, I tried to give my kids so much at Christmas time. I wanted them to have all the toys and treats that they had wanted all year but we were too poor to purchase. I wanted their Christmas to be magical.
But then, as the years went on, I found myself picking up toys and junk that the kids had never played with or enjoyed as much as we all thought they would. The waste of time and money and the Christmas junk that we accumulated.
Now instead of giving the kids toys at Christmas and birthdays, I try to give them experiences. Some of these activities are things we do as a family and some of them are things that the kids have always wanted to do by themselves (think skydiving or karate classes.)
This year, we live close enough to go to a Medieval Times. I've never been before, but I've always wanted to.
How awesome would it be to experience the best parts of life in a castle?
The knights at Medieval times try and be as authentic as possible in their sword fights. They have to start as squires and train to be able to handle the real swords and fighting that goes on in the tournaments. It takes at least six months for them to graduate to a full knight! They need this because when jousting, the Knights charge at speeds of approximately 15 to 20 miles per hour and reach an impact velocity speed of about 30 to 40 miles per hour.
Plus, I've heard that the food is amazing. I'm all for amazing soups, chicken, potatoes, and bread.
Thanks to US Family Guide and Medieval Times, I can't wait to go and try out the dinner and tournament as a family. I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience that my boys will remember forever.
